Kvant of Russia Selects Veeco As/P MOCVD Tool for Production of Multi-Junction Solar Cells

February 28, 2008

WOODBURY, N.Y., February 28, 2007 -- Veeco Instruments Inc. (Nasdaq: VECO), announced today that Research Production Enterprise “Kvant” of Moscow, Russia, a leading Russian enterprise in photovoltaic (PV) technology, has ordered a TurboDisc® E450™ arsenic phosphide (As/P) Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) System for production of multi-junction solar cells for commercial space applications.

Valery Semenov, Director of Kvant, said, ”Our decision to add Veeco’s MOCVD As/P E450 System to our fab was based on the tool’s ability to produce exceptionally high quality films,  and the throughput advantage of this system, which is key as we continue to increase output of our photovoltaic cells.”

Sam DiRenzo, Vice President, General Manager of Veeco's MOCVD Operations commented, “Kvant’s decision to choose our TurboDisc E450 As/P MOCVD Systems for their capacity expansion is further proof of our MOCVD systems’ production-proven excellent process performance.”

Also capable of producing multi-junction solar cells for terrestrial applications, Veeco’s TurboDisc E450 (and its recently introduced successor, the E475) As/P tools are engineered for the high-volume production of compound semiconductor materials, and offer a level of process control and reliability unmatched by competing MOCVD technologies. With integrated RealTemp® 200 technology for direct closed loop in-situ wafer temperature control, and fast gas switching for strict control of interface abruptness, these technically advanced systems provide superior material quality and process efficiency. In addition to triple junction solar cells, applications include HBTs, pHEMTs, red, orange and yellow HB-LEDs, and laser diodes.

About Kvant
